Jet Noise

The scientists and engineers at Spectral Energies have a strong expertise in jet noise and flow acoustics. Along with our many partners, we have been actively studying the problem for years. Our expertise in this field include performing advanced experimental diagnostics, simulating high-fidelity data, developing cutting-edge flow control methods for noise reduction, and implementing/developing innovative data analysis tools.

Spectral Energies utilizes its expertise in diagnostics to obtain high-quality experimental data. These data are captured using a plethora of methods including, high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV), high-speed schlieren, pressure sensors, and microphones.

In addition to experiments, aeroacoustic simulations are performed by Spectral Energies using the Naval Research Laboratory’s (NRL’s) Jet Engine Noise Reduction (JENRE) code. Results from JENRE match the experiments to within the experimental uncertainty.

To analyze the high-speed, high-fidelity data, Spectral Energies and its partners implement and develop novel analysis tools based on techniques such as proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), stochastic estimation, and wavelet decomposition to name a few.  With these advanced analysis tools Spectral Energies has improved the understanding of the relationship between the near-field fluid dynamics and the far-field acoustics.

Results from these studies have allowed Spectral Energies to develop advanced flow control techniques, low-dimensional models to predict jet noise quickly and accurately, and an increased understanding of the near to far field connection. Spectral Energies has worked on projects related to jet noise that range from fundamental studies using axisymmetric nozzles to advanced three-stream engine nozzles to UAS nozzles.
